Grading in FlexPath courses is competency based rather than through letter grades. Learners are assessed on different skills in each course and must demonstrate competency in ALL in order to pass each course rather than a single average score for the whole course. This means a learner cannot use one strong skill to average out for a weaker skill. This, Capella University feels, will result in a more fully prepared learner and graduate upon completion of the program.

Competencies are given the following possible scores: Non-Performance, Basic, Proficient, and Distinguished.

Undergraduate learners must achieve Basic in all competencies to pass each course. Graduate learners must achieve Proficient in all competencies to pass each course.
