When the job post asks you to include one, the answer is an easy “yes”. The answer is a little harder to provide, though, when the post is not clear or just asks for a resume. It can be to your benefit to include a cover letter as it provides you an opportunity to make a connection with the reader and describe your qualifications for a specific position.

It is important to make sure that your cover letter is targeted to the position you are seeking. A generic cover letter, like a generic resume, is not a good representation of what you have to offer to an employer. By customizing your cover letter, you improve your chances of coming across as a candidate who is interested in this role and not just any role.
