There are many useful features available in LinkedIn premium including the ability to send InMail messages to people not in your network, advanced search options, visibility into your competition, and featured applicant status, to name a few. While these can be really helpful in your job search, there are plenty of things you can do with a free membership to assist in your job search. Some examples are:

  • Complete your profile. This includes having a profile picture, vibrant summary, and results oriented experiences.
  • Grow your network. By having more 1st level connections, you increase the chances of being found by people looking for someone like you.
  • Display your qualifications. Attach artifacts and links that showcase what you have done and can do.
  • Join groups. You can message a limited number of people in your groups, even if you are not connected to them.

LinkedIn typically offers a free trial of their Premium Subscription, so you can potentially try it out before you commit to paying for it. In the end, you will have to decide if getting a premium account on LinkedIn is right for you (and if so which type would be best). If you want to know how to make the most of the free version, check out the Online Social Networking section of our website as well as the LinkedIn Tips YouTube Playlist.
