Employers are often not forthcoming when it comes to salary for positions they have posted. While sites like salary.com and glassdoor.com provide some information, they are not comprehensive and do not validate their information.

The best way to learn about salary for a position is to talk to someone in that role at the organization. While it is not necessarily appropriate to ask people what they earn, it can be alright to ask them about their understanding of the starting salary or salary range for the role you are interested in. It is best when this conversation occurs before a position is posted, so conducting informational interviews at organizations where you would like to work can be a great, proactive strategy to use. This also allows you to be a known commodity within the organization when you apply, which could result in a referral and even priority in the hiring process.
