It can feel both great and terrifying to be done with your interview. When you’ve finished wrapping it up, there are still opportunities to leave a positive or negative impression for your candidacy. It is completely appropriate to follow-up after an interview in two separate ways:
- Sending a Thank You note to everyone involved in the process
- Checking on the status of the hiring process
For the first way, you will want to send this out relatively soon after the interview is done, typically within a day. The timing of the second follow-up will depend on what you have learned through the hiring process. If you have asked what the timeline and process is moving forward, that can help guide your follow-up. You will want to wait until their planned time to connect with you has passed. This way, you do not come across as overeager, but you are seen as interested in the position. The one exception to this would be if you have another job offer and want to fully explore this other opportunity, in which case you can reach out earlier to let them know this new information. If you do not have any information about the timeline, following up a week or so after the interview would be appropriate, to again show your interest without being perceived as impatient.
You will want to follow the recruiter/hiring manager’s lead on whether to follow-up an additional time or not. Typically, once is enough to show you are still interested and not be seen as a nuisance.
