Behavioral based interview questions are based on the premise that past behavior predicts future behavior. These questions usually begin with the phrase, "Tell me about a time when...,". The interviewer is looking for you to provide a specific example that demonstrates the skill they are asking about.
Think of your responses to behavioral interview questions as short stories. These stories should include four components (CARD):
- The challenge
- The action you took
- The results of that action
- Relevant details (e.g., how much, how many, when, where)
As you plan your stories, use a sentence or two to address each of these components, and keep your answers to one or two minutes in length. The job description will typically identify the required skills they are looking for. Reflect on these skills and your experiences to come prepared with answers that show how you have demonstrated them.
