This is a great question, because it is at face value very simple, but actually points to some of the nuances involved in networking! The simple answer is “Yes, of course!” The nuanced answer is “Probably, under the right circumstances.”
Using a business or calling card can be a useful strategy for leaving your contact information with professionals you are connecting and networking with. One of my favorite tactics is to include a few key words or a short phrase to summarize what you have to offer on the back of the card. It’s especially good to carry cards in social settings so you always have a handy way of sharing your contact information.
Using a resume works best in a sit-down meeting (even an informal one) where it makes sense for you to have a folder or bag. If it is helpful to the conversation, such as for the other person to see a snap shot of your background or to get feedback about your resume, then you can absolutely share it. It is not effective, however, to hand out generic versions of your document and ask people to keep you in mind.
