Preparing for an informational interview is a key component of ensuring you get the information you need and leave behind a positive, professional image.  This preparation allows you time to reflect on exactly what you want to learn, which helps you create a list of questions to bring.  Some conversation-inspiring questions include:

  • What type of degree or credential would I need to enter this field/get hired for this job?
  • Is there growth in this field? What is the job potential?
  • What can I do to make myself attractive as a candidate?
  • Given what you understand about me, who else should I talk with?  Could I say you suggested I contact them?

Being well prepared and even practicing asking your questions beforehand will help you feel less nervous.  Once you have conducted a few informational interviews, you will begin to see a flow to the conversations and become more skillful in directing the conversation to focus on what’s of most value to you.
