Qualifications vary depending on the role and the institution. Here are some common guidelines you can use:

  • Are you a subject matter expert? A master’s degree in the subject area that you plan to teach is the minimum requirement for most teaching positions in higher education and a doctorate in the subject area is often preferred or required.
  • Do you have experience teaching? Employers prefer hiring people who have shown that they can do the role when possible.
  • Have you worked in the field you would be teaching about? For example, a candidate for a position teaching accounting who also has worked in an accounting firm would be seen as more attractive than one who has taught the material but not worked as an accountant.

The Career Center has developed extensive resources to highlight your qualifications and find opportunities (including an on-demand tutorial on the topic), since many Capella learners and alumni are interested in teaching in higher education.
