There are a number of benefits to writing a new version of your cover letter each time you apply for a job. Hiring Managers report that a generic cover letter will almost immediately go into the “no” pile. When you take the time to write a customized letter, you are sending a positive message to the employer and letting them know that you are genuinely interested in working for them.

Some ways to customize your letter include:

  • Addressing the cover letter to the name of the hiring manager.
  • Including the name of the specific position that you are applying for in the opening paragraph, making sure to match the job title listed in the job posting exactly.
  • Explaining why you are interested in working for the specific organization. Research the organization to make sure that this comes across authentically.
  • Providing specific evidence of your qualifications in relation to the position to clearly demonstrate why you are a good fit for the role.
