The best bullet points are those that go beyond describing what you have done and include the accomplishments you achieved through your role. What are you proud of having done at work? The experiences that come to mind are your accomplishments. Focusing on results (e.g. money or time saved, processes improved, problems solved, risks mitigated, etc.) will make you stand out to the reader over those who describe only tasks performed.

For each accomplishment, take notes on these four things:

  • Challenge – the situation, problem, or requirement at hand
  • Action – the specific actions you took to resolve the challenge
  • Result – the benefit created in as specific and measurable terms as possible
  • Details - add clarifying details to provide context, consider these questions:  how many, how much, how long, and how often.

For example: your department’s month-end inventory process is inefficient, so you gather requirements from management, organize a meeting to gather suggestions, design an updated process that management approves. When implemented, 4 hours of time were saved each month.

The bullet point might look like this:

  • Reduced time spent on monthly inventory by 4 hours through redesigning inventory process with input from team, gaining management approval, and leading implementation of new process.
