As an introvert myself, I understand the idea that networking is a bit scary. However, networking is vital to most job searches, as it is a source of information and opportunities that can’t be obtained by just doing an “online” job search. Here are a few tips to networking as an introvert:

  • Start online – tools like LinkedIn, Twitter, and others can be a starting point for connecting with people and sharing information. Email can also be used as an initial introduction. Once this first hurdle has been cleared and you’ve connected with someone, it may be easier to meet on the phone or in person.
  • Offer assistance – one way to “break the ice” with people is to offer to assist by sharing information, setting up the chairs at a networking meeting, or volunteering  to check people into an event.
  • Don’t “cold call” – start networking with people you already know such as former co-workers, fellow students, or even friends and relatives. During these first meetings, always ask for a name or two of someone they know who would be good for you to talk with. Then, when you make that next request, it will be a direct referral, not a cold call.
