Yes, you are required to be registered and paying tuition while you collect and analyse your data. As you will need to work with your mentor and you'll need the services of the library, the IRB, and other university areas during this time, you must be registered. It is standard within PhD and other doctoral programmes that learners be enrolled during the data collection and analysis.
