All doctoral learners are expected to remain continuously enrolled once they begin the comprehensive examination and dissertation phases OR doctoral capstone phase of their program, enrolling every quarter for the appropriate course in accordance with the comprehensive examination and/or dissertation OR doctoral capstone course sequence. A learner is considered “inactive” during any academic quarter in which he or she is not enrolled in any Capella course.
There are, occasions, however, where a learner may determine that it is in his or her best interest to take a planned quarter of inactivity or leave of absence from the program. Learners are encouraged to consult with a academic coach prior to taking a leave to discuss the ramifications of inactivity. Inactivity can result in a number of unintended consequences, including but not limited to: deferred progress, the loss of courseroom access and other Capella resources, mentor and/or committee reassignment, suspension of IRB approval and/or research activity, financial aid repayment, or administrative withdrawal. Depending on the conditions leading to a requested leave, a academic coach can assist you in determining the best course of action and type of leave, as well as an anticipated plan for return.
