An alternative loan is a non-federal, credit-based loan -also commonly referred to as a private loan - typically offered by banks or credit unions. We do not recommend one private lender over another. If you are unsure where to begin your search, we recommend starting with your local bank or credit union.

It is also important when working with your chosen provider to be clear about your financial needs. Many institutions have several different kinds of loans that apply to different situations.

Before applying, consult a member of the Financial Aid Support Team (FAST) by calling 1-888-CAPELLA (1-888-227-3552) or emailing fast@capella.edu. FAST can help you determine whether you have room in your cost of attendance to apply for a non-federal loan. FAST can provide you with email instructions to notify us if you are approved for the loan.

Self-certification forms are available and will be completed upon request.

If you decide to move forward with a private loan:

  1. Contact the private lender of your choice.
  2. Work with them to determine the application process.
  3. Once your lender approves your private loan, Capella will add it to your financial aid offer within 6-10 business days, provided we do not require additional information.
