The specific impacts of dropping a course will depend on what point in the term you are dropping, when you last participated in the course and the number of credits or program points you are active in after the drop is completed.
If you are thinking about dropping a course, contact a financial aid advisor (1-888-Capella [227-3552] and your academic coach) to review the specific financial and academic impacts prior to dropping a course.
When deciding whether to drop a course, there are some things to consider:
- If you drop to zero active credits or program points before the end of the course (either from dropping a course or being dropped due to non-participation), a return of Title IV funds may be required.
- Undergraduate GuidedPath learners who have multiple sessions in a term who want to drop their second session course should do so before completing any first session courses. Dropping the second session course after the first one ends may result in a Return of Title IV funds.
- Be aware of your annual and lifetime borrowing limits and how much you have borrowed (you can find your borrowing limits and other information on Studentloans.gov) when deciding whether to drop. Paying tuition for the same course more than once increases the chances that you will run out of funding before the end of your program.
