One good method is to use the “2 + 2 method.” Select two items about a learner’s post that you enjoyed or the learner did well, and write one sentence for each item. Then, recommend two things that the learner can improve upon in future posts. (Always make recommendations in a respectful tone.)

Another method is the two-paragraph method. In paragraph one, comment on questions like:

  • Did the learner answer all parts of the question?
  • How well did the learner respond to the question?
  • Did the learner support each claim or statement of fact with a reference?

Then, in paragraph two, extend the dialogue by:

  • Making respectful suggestions about how the learner can improve future Courseroom posts
  • Recommending a resource you have used in the past
  • Posing a question to the class or an idea you were struggling with
  • Answering the question or offering guidance

Additionally, ask one or two questions that can extend the scholarly dialogue, such as inquiring about the learner’s views are on a certain issue or challenging the learner to think from a different perspective. For example, “What would you do if…?” or “How would you react if X event occurred and what steps would you take to remedy the situation?”
