You can improve your writing at the doctoral level by:

  1. Noting and mimicking how articles you enjoy reading are written.
  2. Setting 1-2 writing goals for each assignment based on past instructor feedback.
  3. Practicing writing every day, even if only for 10 minutes a day.
  4. Composing detailed outlines for your writing assignments.
  5. Making your writing concise and straightforward (i.e., editing, removing jargon).
  6. Creating a logical structure that optimizes the delivery of your information.
  7. Ensuring your big picture arguments are grounded by the individual words and sentences you use to defend them.
  8. Removing self-explanatory or overgeneralized statements, in preference for research.
  9. Providing evidence, then offering a slightly different perspective or interpretation.
  10. Reading your writing out loud and having friends review your word.
