In general, you should introduce quotations, paraphrases, and summaries with relevant evidence, context, or an interpretation of the information for the reader. While your voice should be the main component in your work, you can inform your writing with sources using the following tips:

  • Always introduce a source with your own thought on the subject matter.
  • Avoid long quotations that aren’t surrounded by your own interpretation or opinion.
  • Avoid using sources you don’t understand.
  • Utilize commentary—i.e., don’t allow readers to interpret too much on their own.
  • Only add quotations if they support your claims. Never include quotations simply to meet an assignment’s specified number of outside resources.
