In-text citations go in the body of your paper and require the author’s last name and the year of the publication. Here are two examples:

  1. Most forms of writing are reader-oriented (Smith, 2004).
  2. As Smith (2004) noted, most forms of writing are reader-oriented.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when writing in-text citations:

  • Never put first names in the parentheses.
  • Never put a full web address in the parentheses.
  • The period always goes outside the parentheses at the very end of the sentence. It does not go inside the parentheses.
  • Do not use the word “and” in parentheses if there are two or more authors; instead, use the ampersand (&). For example: (Smith & Jones, 2004).
